On Becoming A Better Version

Becoming a better version of yourself every day should be the goal to aim for every day you are alive. It seems easy to say, but how exactly do we improve and become better? The answer to this question would depend on the individual and their circumstance. For some, becoming better is simply showing up every day and doing the job, because the progress they seek comes from sticking to what they do every day.

For others, becoming a better version is simply changing what they do and trying to do something else. For you, it is whatever you believe deep down that can take you to where you need to be. But before you become a better version, you need to decide what you want to become better at. Find the identity you want to improve and work on that.

For me, I want to become a better Muslim, a better researcher, a better writer, a better husband, and a better runner. As such, I work on some of these identities every single day and try to imagine what it would be like to be better in each of these roles. One of the things to do to be better is sometimes doing nothing. I am taking a few days from running to become a better runner as I am recovering from a major run. That can seem like doing nothing about my running identity, but that is what I need to do.

Sometimes what you need is doing nothing, but most times you have to do a whole lot more. In being a better Muslim and a better researcher, I am trying to find one thing I can do every day to improve. In becoming a better Muslim, I try the best that I can to pray on time and find something to be consistent about. In becoming a better researcher, I am trying to read more and more to better understand the materials in the field and to always say when I do not understand a concept. These things take time to grow and mature, but I am trying to find something that polishes my identity every day.

I guess the same is applicable to you. Find out what identities you want to improve upon. Do you want to be a better friend? Then reach out to your friends more. Want to be a better child? Be good to your parents.

Growth is about moving forward in the tiniest of things. You do not need to overwhelm yourself. A little at a time is what you need to get started. Keep going and keep pushing on. Thanks so much and God bless
